BZ, clic-clac, or Rapido: which mechanism for which use?

The transformation mechanism determines nighttime comfort, the space required for opening, and long-term durability. Three systems coexist, each with its own logic.

The Clic-clac

The clic-clac is the historical mechanism. The seat and backrest, connected, fold flat in two clicks. Opening requires about 60 to 70 cm of clearance, an advantage in a small living room. The transverse fold in the middle of the mattress can become noticeable after several months. The frame bar located under this junction eventually marks the lumbar support point.

For daily use, the clic-clac remains viable provided you choose a high-end model: at La Maison Convertible, our everyday sleeping clic-clacs include a mattress of approximately 17 cm that can reach a high density (up to 50 kg/m³ on some models), which significantly pushes back the discomfort threshold. At the entry level, however, the clic-clac remains suitable for very occasional use, less than two nights per week.

The BZ

The BZ operates by tilting the seat forward. The backrest folds flat, and the slatted base slides out. There's no central fold: the mattress remains in one piece when opened. The necessary clearance is about 80 cm, making it compatible with most urban living rooms. Mechanical reliability is remarkable: a well-designed steel structure lasts for many years without failure.

In an 18 m² studio, the BZ is often the most rational solution, saving space, providing seamless comfort, and ensuring longevity. At La Maison Convertible, our BZ models come in 80 or 90 cm for one person, and 120, 140, or 160 cm wide for two, with a mattress generally 14 to 15 cm thick, which can go up to 20 cm on daily sleeping versions.

The Rapido

With the Rapido, opening takes just a few seconds without moving any cushions. The slatted or mesh base, fixed under the seat, slides forward while the backrest lowers. No transverse bar crosses the bed. The independent mattress remains thick and homogeneous. However, the Rapido requires significant clearance in front of the seat, generally around 180 cm. In a 280 cm deep living room with a 95 cm sofa, 185 cm remains: opening is possible, provided the coffee table is moved every evening. Our advisors always check this point before ordering. A person under 60 kg stresses the foam less: a density of 28 to 30 kg/m³ may be sufficient for regular sleeping. Between 60 and 80 kg, aim for 30 to 35 kg/m³. Above 80 kg, going below 35 kg/m³ risks localized sagging within two years. Convertible sofa bed: a specific format for small spaces

The convertible sofa bed distinguishes itself from a sofa by its silhouette: backrest parallel to the wall, often reduced seat depth, discreet or absent armrests. In Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, in studios under 25 m², this configuration is often the only viable option for daily sleeping without sacrificing circulation space.
